3 ways Sage X3 can help you manage floor assets without CMMS

There are a number of ways that a company can get an overview and details about its floor assets (machines, tools, traps, etc). But the ideal way is to store all its data about maintenance operations in a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), such as such as DIMMO Maint.

A CMMS is very useful for your maintenance workers because they have the information at their fingertips about the machines that need maintenance and where they can find the parts. Management can use the information to determine if the repair cost is worthwhile or if it is more cost effective to replace the machine.

Many organizations recognize a need for a CMMS system but haven’t the resources to implement one…. well, maybe they do. Here are a couple of practical, relatively easy options for light asset tracking in Sage X3 that don’t require a full-blown CMMS.

Option 1: Sage X3 Fixed Assets

Sage X3 Fixed Assets provides both financial and physical tracking of assets in Sage X3. This means that you can automate the generation of depreciation entries, include additive costs to the value of the asset and maintain the physical ownership of the asset. The transfer of the asset and the disposal of the asset when it’s replaced are also features the application supports. The fixed assets feature can integrate with the inventory layer of Sage X3 so that you can track an asset in Sage X3 inventory and potentially schedule the asset or make it unavailable.

Option 2: Sage X3 inventory and quality control

Whether or not you opt to use Sage X3 Fixed Assets, the asset tracking flags present in Sage X3 provide some options for tracking physical assets (separate from inventory) using the inventory layer of the system. You have the ability to leverage serialization and location management functionality to manage asset tags, discreet value of the asset and the physical location of that asset. The quality control functions in Sage X3 give you quite a bit of flexibility in terms of controlling the disposition of those assets. You can further use the quality control features to enforce periodic inspections of assets on the floor by assigning expiration and re-control dating to the asset. The re-control process has its own inspection sheet assigned and you can reset the inspection interval based on the results of the calibration tests or other measures.

Option 3: Recommended location management schemes

In order to fully leverage the inventory asset tracking solution, it might be worthwhile to consider how you’re going to document the physical position of assets in the facility. While using your standard inventory positions might work, it’s more likely that you’ll want to build an overlay scheme leveraging location types and locations that are build specifically for this purpose. In this way, you can control the contents of the locations (via specific quality status parameters) and manage counts independently from your stocked inventory.
